Signpost 53 (10 May)

Welcome to another edition of Signpost, providing you with a fabulous selection of curios from across the internet.

32 years ago this week Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical 'Cats', based on T.S.Eliot's 'Old Possums Book of Practical Cats’, became the West End's longest-running musical after completing an eight-year stint. 26 years ago Lord Nolan presented his report on standards in public life in an attempt to rid Westminster of the constant allegations of individual 'sleaze', creating the Nolan principles. And 20 years ago today the FA Cup final was held outside England when it took place at the new Millennium Stadium in Cardiff.

  • A ground-breaking research project into the response to the COVID-19 pandemic has revealed how Retirement Village and Extra Care Housing operators helped to protect the lives of their residents and staff. The research project aimed to better understand the experiences of retirement villages and extra care housing during the pandemic, including the effectiveness of measures taken to protect the health and well-being of residents and staff. You can read more about it here.

DO

  • On 15th January 2009, Captain Chesley Sullenberger became an international hero when his experience and professionalism brought to safety the 155 passengers aboard flight 1549 after an unprecedented bird strike knocked out both engines soon after takeoff from La Guardia Airport. You can watch Sully, the film about the consequences of that accident here.

FUN

  • Patatap is a website that emulates percussion instruments and allows you to create a track. You will see a plain grey screen but if you tap in different places (or press different keys) you will hear different percussive sounds and see matching visuals to complement them. Give it a try!
