20220127 SMT Belly Laughs Night 34

A bellyful of pizzas and laughs as comedy returns to B Block

Comedy made a welcome return to B Block last Thursday with guests at the sold out gig getting their fill of pizza and laughs.

More than 80 guests came to B Block in Keynsham’s Chocolate Quarter for wood-fired pizzas and a showcase of top comedy talent, including Priya Hall, Roger O'Sullivan, Jasmine Olivia-Morton, Eleri Morgan, Denis Len and Gavin Osborn.

It was great to see so many happy, smiling faces once again enjoying comedy and pizza.

Belly Laughs

The brainchild of legendary Bristolian comic Mark Olver, Belly Laughs sees some of the UK’s best comedians tour Bristol’s small independent food establishments throughout January raising money for good causes, such as the Julian Trust and Fareshare.

Belly Laughs was created in 2018 to showcase the city’s vibrant food and comedy talent in a month where both industries are typically slow, all while supporting local charities.

The return to B Block was even more special for Mark as he volunteered in St Monica Trust’s Charterhouse Care Home during the pandemic, which is also located in The Chocolate Quarter.

Mark Olver said: “The idea behind Belly Laughs is to do comedy nights in venues that wouldn’t normally host events and we’ve always loved the idea of doing a gig in a retirement village.

“When everything shut during the lockdown, I saw an advert asking for people to help out in the care home.

"Remembering how much I enjoyed meeting the residents here during previous Belly Laughs, I became a ‘helping hand’ and worked there for two days a week supporting the residents and staff.”

A big supporter

St Monica Trust’s Food Development Manager, Adrian Kirikmaa said: “Mark’s always been a big supporter of what we’re trying to achieve here.

"He always does a fantastic job in organising the event and putting together such an amazing line-up of comedians, which raised £1,000 for the local charities Mark supports.”

“The pandemic has been very challenging for everyone involved in the hospitality industry, so it was great to see so many happy, smiling faces once again enjoying comedy and pizza.”

Community hub

B Block, which opened in 2017, is an award-winning all-day restaurant specialising in authentic wood-fired pizzas, quality coffee and desserts.

The restaurant is a community hub, particularly for residents living on the wider Somerdale site and near-by office workers, plus visitors meeting relatives and friends who live in The Chocolate Quarter.
