Welcome back to Signpost. It has now been a year since the first lockdown and we continue to provide a selection of links and resources that might entertain, intrigue and educate you. This week we bring you various resources around nature and geology. If you would like a trip through Yosemite National Park, a better understanding of Stonehenge or fancy meeting the Flintstones, please read on!
REFLECT
- Many people find peace and spirituality in nature, whether it be in our own garden, a park or out in the wilderness. In keeping with this week's theme of the natural world, we have a reflection titled “Nature’s beauty is a reflection of our inner beauty” by Mike George.
CONNECT
- The Google Arts & Culture website offers a mind-boggling selection of resources to explore art, museums and places from all over the world. You could take a short trip to our own Jurassic Coast, fly to America to visit Yosemite National Park and then pop down to South America and explore the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu. - How many continents are there on Earth? Whilst many of us would answer 7, in recent years there has been a lot of evidence to identify the 8th missing continent, “Zealandia”. You can read more about it here.
- Keeping within the discussion of continents, this article and the connected 40-second video show some amazing detail about how the Earth’s tectonic plates have moved over the last billion years!
- If we leave Earth for a moment, there has been a lot of news lately about NASA’s Perseverance rover landing on and navigating across the surface of Mars. This article from NASA gives a great overview of the mission and some fascinating images from Mars.
DO
- For something closer to home, why not try this recent documentary about the hidden secrets of Stonehenge? Join professor Alice Roberts as she uses cutting edge research and a team of archaeologists to find the previous life of the famous bluestones.
FUN
- You can’t celebrate rocks and geology without a visit to the Flintstones! This documentary explores the development and evolution of the first prime-time animated series.
