20180429 Smtkids Rugby Tournament Cheddar 1

Trust sponsors Mini Cheddars

Cheddar Valley Rugby Club Mini and Junior Players celebrated their annual, end of season Festival of Rugby wearing a brand new kit sponsored by the St Monica Trust.

The club welcomed teams from across the South West, and touring sides from as far afield as London, to their Sharpham Road ground for their end of season games.

Playing with pride

The tournament began with a mass warm up involving hundreds of players, coaches and referees dnacing to Agadoo and The Hokey-Cokey.

Decked out in their brand new shirts in the traditional Cheddar sky blue and scarlet, the home teams from U7’s to U12’s then took on all-comers, with more than 1,500 parents, siblings and fans there to cheer them on.

Cheddar RFC Chairman, Nev Holmes, said: “Cheddar Rugby is a community-based, family-focussed club and seeing these kids playing their game brings a smile to everyone’s faces.

“The St Monica Trust have very kindly sponsored new playing kit for the mini and junior teams and we are so grateful.

“The kids look the part and can wear their colours with extra pride knowing that we have this special connection to an organisation which also cares about our community.

“Having this connection to the St Monica Trust really underlines where our focus is on and off the field.

“Rugby is the ultimate team sport; you have to pull together to support your teammates. That’s the really valuable lesson our kids learn through rugby.

“Receiving this gift from the St Monica Trust demonstrates that we share the values of taking care each other and living life to the fullest.”

Incredibly supportive

The Trust operates five retirement villages across Bristol and North Somerset, including its Sandford Station retirement community in the nearby village of Sandford.

Chief Executive of the St Monica Trust and Shipham resident, David Williams, said: “Our Sandford Station retirement village is now approaching its 10th birthday and the local community has always been incredibly supportive of everything that we are trying to achieve there.

“By supporting the amazing work that Cheddar Valley RFC do in encouraging young people to play this wonderful game that we love, I hope we are going some way to repay the support that everyone has given us since we opened our doors back in 2009.”

The Trust’s Sandford Station retirement village has 108 retirement apartments, a 32-bed general needs nursing care home and 73-bed specialist dementia care home on site. To ask any questions, arrange a viewing or for more information please call us on 0117 949 4004.
