CQC impressed by care home’s ethos
The leadership at a St Monica Trust care home has been rated as ‘outstanding’ by Care Quality Commission inspectors.
The unannounced inspection singled out John Wills House’s leadership for special praise, rating it as ‘Outstanding.’
Overall, the CQC report gave John Wills House a ‘Good’ rating, which also examined safety, effectiveness, caring and responsiveness.
John Wills House Care Home Manager, Wendy Leaman, said:
This is a real team effort. Everyone from the housekeeping, catering, portering and administration teams to the nursing and care teams and all our volunteers, have contributed to this rating.
Outstanding practice
In total John Wills House provides care for 80 people living at the service. The Orchards is home to 15 residents living with dementia, the Beeches has 40 beds which provide short term care and the Willows has 25 beds for those with general nursing needs.
The Care Quality Commission stated that the service could evidence outstanding practice, residents felt well cared for and their relatives spoke positively about being involved in care planning, and the staff were responsive to people’s needs.
Happy since the day I moved in
Comments from residents and their families, included “I could not have better treatment, the staff have such patience, I feel they really care about me”, “lovely staff, could not wish for better people to look after me”, and “I have been happy since the day I moved in”.
The report from the Care Quality Commission stated: “It was evident through our observations between people and staff that there were good, caring relationships and people always appeared relaxed and happy during interactions with staff.
We are working in their home
The report also highlighted the words displayed at the entrance to John Wills House, which read: “Residents are not living in our workplace, we are working in their home.”
Wendy Leaman explained that this was the ethos of the service and this was why it was displayed at the entrance for everyone entering the building to see.

Nursing care at The Chocolate Quarter
The St Monica Trust also offers general needs nursing care and support for older people living with dementia at the Garden House at Cote Lane retirement community, in Bristol and at The Russets and Sherwood at Sandford Station retirement community in North Somerset.
A 93-bed nursing and specialist dementia care home will also be offered at the Trust’s latest development, The Chocolate Quarter in Keynsham, which opens in autumn 2017.
