One of the first things people say when they visit the St Monica Trust is how beautiful the grounds and buildings are. A lot of hard work, patience and love goes into maintaining them. We think it’s worth it because we‘ve seen the marvellous effect the peaceful, scenic surroundings have on our residents and staff. Will you help us keep them looking amazing?

There is very much a team mentality and you’d be expected to turn your hand to most things!

Come rain or shine, depending on your skills, you and your team of estates workers might be expected to prepare the grounds for new shrubs and flowers, tidy borders and hedges to keep the sites looking pristine. Perhaps most importantly, your role will be to create peaceful and relaxing outdoor spaces in which residents can meander at their leisure. It’s a safe place where seasonal plants and flowers can create positive thoughts, remind residents of their own gardens and provide important stimuli; some of our residents even sit and paint or draw the flowers and their surroundings.

Our teams also assist our green-fingered residents who are keen to do some work of their own. As you know, the therapeutic benefits of gardening are incredible.

Of course, it’s not just all outside work. You might be expected to turn your skills to some maintenance within the care home or sheltered accommodation. From changing bulbs and touching up paintwork, to fixing a leaking tap to replacing a broken window.

Our estate workers also play an important part in the welfare and security of our residents.  Providing a 24 hour portering service, they maintain a safe and secure environment, reporting any concerns. They monitor CCTV, conduct building checks and lock-ups, record any incidents, act as a first point of contact for residents with any non-care related problems, assist with the waste and laundry collection and set up for events. Since they contribute so much to day-to-day life on site, they are well-known by the residents, who feel safe knowing they are just a phone call away if needed.

So, are you an outdoors person, who embraces the weather and enjoys seeing the fruits of your labour? Can you apply your practical building maintenance skills to a high standard? Could you contribute to the well-being of residents through gardening activities and creating a pleasing environment for them to live in? If so, a role in the estates team could be for you!

When a resident smiles and says thank you - there is nothing more rewarding than that. The other great thing about the job is that no two days are the same.
